Yarrow – An Epic Herb

In Homer’s epic poem, The Iliad, Achilles uses yarrow to treat his wounded comrades. Consequently its genus name is Achilles.  Following Achilles’ lead, the early Greeks used yarrow in battle and it has been known through history as the military herb, soldier’s wound wart and the knight’s milfoil. It is also used in Native American, Ayurvedic, and Chinese medical traditions.

The main oils in yarrow make it a fine herb for accelerating healing of cuts and bruises.  It is used as an antiseptic, antispasmodic, astringent and it is especially good for soothing and rejuvenating hair follicles and problem scalps.

Shampoo_for_Healthier_HairYarrow is a hardy, easy to care for, and versatile perennial herb with fern-like leaves and colorful, flat-topped flower clusters.  It is native to Europe and Asia and naturalized in North America and throughout the world.  It grows 2 to 4 feet tall and is a durable plant tolerating dry spells and low soil fertility.  The plant blooms in mid-summer into the fall.

Yarrow is safe for most adults.  It may cause drowsiness and should not be used orally when pregnant.

While you may not be dealing with king Agamemnon, Hector, or Helen, you still needn’t scratch your head over how to moisturize, soothe, and stimulate your hair and scalp. You will find yarrow in these AfterGlow products: Herbal Infusion Shampoo and Herbal Infusion Hair Treatment and Conditioner.

To Use Arnica, or Not To Use Arnica, Was Never The Question

Arnica has been used since the time of Shakespeare to soothe muscle aches, reduce inflammation, and heal wounds.  Hildegard of Bingen, a keen observer of nature, actually wrote about the healing properties of Arnica in the 12th century long before Hamlet’s hesitations with his stepfather, Claudius. Applied to the skin as a cream, ointment, liniment, or salve it serves as an anti-inflammatory, pain reliever, and local antibiotic. It is most often used for sprains and bruises. Arnica is also good for swelling or muscle spasms due to sports activities and arthritis. As an herb, arnica is usually applied topically (on the skin). It is a very potent herb and must be used with carrier oil at a low dilution.ArnicaBKG

Arnica is a perennial that grows 1 to 2 feet tall with bright, yellow daisy-like flowers that appear in July and August. It is found on the hills and mountains of northern and central Europe and Siberia and in the northwestern United States. More common names for Arnica are Mountain daisy and Leopard’s bane.

Today Arnica has grown to be one of the most popular homeopathic medicines around the world. Along with what was noted earlier, Arnica is used to relieve stiffness from flying or long-distance driving, and playground bumps and bruises! It is toxic if it gets inside the body especially at full strength. It should not be applied to broken skin, an open wound, or taken orally except when diluted homeopathically.

You need not endure the slings and arrows of outrageous muscle pain, bumps and bruises, and inflammation. You will find Arnica in these AfterGlow Naturals products: Sore Muscle Rub and Massage Oil.

Calendula – More Than A Beautiful Flower

Calendula_E173Calendula (Calendula Officinalis) – think flower power when it comes to a skin and wound remedy.  Calendula is an extremely useful and versatile herb and has been used medicinally for centuries. It has great wound healing properties helping new tissue to grow. You are treated to calendula’s healing properties in a number of our skincare products.

Calendula is excellent for varicose veins, bruises, rashes, juvenile acne, eye swelling and redness, and eczema. It aids in the treatment of spider veins, sores, burns, wrinkles, swelling, and stretch marks. It is also used to treat snake and insect bites.

Calendula has a high content of flavonoids, chemicals that act as anti-oxidants in the body. Anti-oxidants are thought to protect body cells from damage caused by a chemical process called oxidation that may suppress the immune function. In fact, calendula stimulates immune system activity and it has anti-inflammatory effects due to its flavonoid content.

There are no generally reported side effects though calendula should not taken orally when pregnant or breast-feeding. This precaution does not to apply to our products which are topical ointments.  Calendula is safe and nontoxic.

Because of its safe and proven beneficial effects, you will find calendula in a number of our products: Calendula Eye Cream, Intensive Moisturizing Treatment, Boonville Anti-Scar Balm, Gentle Facial Scrub, Herbal Skin Relief, Cool Mint Lip Balm,  Orange Lip Balm, and Mineral Rich Rhassoul Clay Mask.
